With temps hovering around the freezing mark outside and the dry heat we have cranking in our homes, our skin tends to take a beating throughout the winter months. The good news is you’re not doomed to suffer from scaly, patchy skin for an entire season. These five tips will help you keep that summer glow throughout the year!
Invest in a humidifier. Using a cool mist humidifier in your home will counteract the drying effects of most home heating systems. Adding humidity to the air will help your skin retain some of its natural moisture (especially at night when it’s most receptive to repair and rejuvenation.)
Switch to a mild cleanser. Facial cleansers with harsh chemicals can strip away moisture and irritate the skin--especially in times of severe weather conditions. Mild cleansers are gentler and help maintain the skin’s delicate balance during the winter months.
Exfoliate 2-3 times per week. Cell turnover tends to be slower in the winter and dead cells build up on the surface of your skin, causing your complexion to appear dull and patchy. Exfoliating regularly removes the dead skin, revealing the fresher, glowing skin underneath.
Go with a more intense moisturizer. During the winter months, you might find that your usual moisture isn’t pulling its weight. Opt for an ultra-hydrating formula. Applying your moisturizer after cleansing, while your skin is still slightly damp will allow for max absorption. It’s also a good idea to reapply several times throughout the day.
Use sunscreen. Even in the winter? Yes, girl...even in the winter. It doesn’t matter what climate you live in or whether you don’t see the sun for weeks at a time. Believe it or not, we’re exposed to ultraviolet rays that damage our skin even when it’s cloudy and ten below zero, so you want to be sure to make sunscreen a daily part of your skincare routine.
